Laura laughed. It didn’t matter what she was laughing at, she was laughing. She was enjoying herself. She talked and laughed and teased me. God, how she teased me. Not just with her words, but with her body and her smiles and her eyes.

I was not going to push for more after our date, but I wasn’t going to say no if she asked. I’d been hard since the moment I took her into my arms on that dance floor. I was sure I would blow at some point, but I just kept getting harder. Fucking hell, the woman was intoxicating. Better than any drink. Better than anything.

“I think you should show this side to the rest of the staff,” Laura said. “They’d love to see you relaxed.”

“I’m not feeling very relaxed right now,” I admitted.

“You know what I mean. You’re always tense and barking at us. I know you’re our boss, but it’s good to know you have a fun side, too. I never thought you did.”

“Why did you agree to a date? If you didn’t think I was fun, why were you at all interested?”

She shrugged. “I admire you. I always have. Before I moved here, I looked you up. I knew the work you were doing was impressive, and I wanted to be a part of it. But when I got here, I saw the way you treated your patients. The way you would talk to them and reassure them and give every last piece of yourself to help them. It was hard not to find that attractive.”

I nodded slowly and studied her. Her cheeks were flushed from the dancing and the drinks and the laughing, but there was something in her eyes. A vulnerability that said she wasn’t sure she should have admitted all that to me.

“I’m sorry I’ve never given that same thing to you.”

She shrugged and waved her hand as though it wasn’t a big deal, but it was. It was a huge deal. She was taking a chance on me. She was betting that there was something inside me worth discovering.

“I love what I do, what we do. It’s not easy, but it’s worthwhile to know we tried everything possible to save as many people as possible. And in this area, there aren’t enough doctors treating cancer patients. But it’s made me…distant a lot of the time. My therapist, Veronica, says—”

“Wait, Veronica? She’s your therapist?” Laura asked. Her brows tugged together.

“And a friend, but yes. We went to med school together. Why?”

“I thought she was your…stand-in or something.”

“Stand-in?”

Laura shrugged uncomfortably. She avoided my gaze and fidgeted with her straw wrapper. “The woman you took to events and whatever.”

“She is. Since we’re both doctors, we go to a lot of events together. Her husband isn’t a doctor and hates going. He thinks they’re painfully boring.”

“She’s married?”

“Yeah. For a few years now. He’s in politics. She’s a psychiatrist for powerful people. Doctors who deal with things like we do, death and illness, but also scandals or slander or things like that.
